HIGHLIGHTS

1994:   Affiliation granted on 1 February by Northern Transvaal Marathon Association.

            Pieter Sutherland was elected as the first Chairman.

            Ishmael Mashiangako became the first Irene member to obtain Provincial colours.

The first race (10/21km) was presented on 19 November. It was known as The Centurion Country Club Estate Road Race.

Club was 60 members strong.

 

1995:   The first candle light night race was presented.

The 21km race was cancelled due to heavy rain. Only 10km could take place. An    unofficial race took place on the ARC grounds in place of the 21km.

 

1997:   Irene finished 2nd in the AGN league.

            The clubhouse sod turning ceremony took place on 25 October.

            Membership exceeded 100.

 

1998:   Anne Chester won gold at Comrades. Finished 10th in time of 7h10min.

            LiquiFruit became sponsor for 10/21 km race.

            Inauguration of clubhouse on 24 October.

 

1999:   First Makhulu Walk took place on 13 February.

            Susan Vermeulen broke the Africa record in the 20 km walk.

            The first club away weekend to Ellisras.

            First Comrades pre and post functions  were held.

            Membership exceeded 200.

 

2000:   Dirk Cloete became the second chairman.

            Three year management plan was excepted.

 

2001:   Sunet Harmse and Belinda Skinner obtained GN colours.

            First Elandsvalley weekend was held.

            Membership exceeded 300.

 

2002:   Irene took full ownership of walking event. Known as Irene Country Walk in future.

            The 7th biggest club at Comrades.

            Half marathon amongst the top 10 in the Country.

            The drinks trolley was used for the first time.

            Membership exceeded 400.

 

2003:   The 3rd biggest club at Comrades.

            Lantern race was voted 2nd best in the Country in short distance category by Runner’s World.

            Kitchen trolley was taken in use to set yet another standard.

            The Chairman’s Ball replaced the Comrades post function.

            Membership exceeded 600 members.

 

2004:  The 3rd biggest club at Comrades.

            Membership exceeded 700 members.
