Spar Irene Lantern Night Race

Come and enjoy an evening in the country with us. An unforgettable running and/or walking experience in the safe farm atmosphere of the Irene ARC Campus will melt away all stress. The lantern-lit route is the "only true blue romantic run" as quoted from Tom Cottrell's Runners Guide.
Our lantern race is the best supported 10 km night race in South Africa over the past seven years, having almost 4000 runners.

Modern Athlete Irene Ultra

The Modern Athlete Irene Ultra, which will take place on 8 April 2018, is regarded as ideally placed for Comrades Marathon hopefuls who still have to qualify, or hoping to get a better seeding.
The Ultra format gives maximum benefit to the runners. The Ultra Marathon, over 48 kilometres, must be completed under 6 hours by those hoping to qualify. This race is perfectly timed, and allows qualifiers to comfortably accumulate essential mileage before the traditional taper period.
The route through Irene’s suburbs and down to Fountains Valley and back has no significant climbs allowing runners to achieve better times. The 48km along with a 21.1km will start at 05:30 on Sunday 8 April 2018 at the Irene Agricultural Research Campus.
Now in its 3rd year, #THEQualifier invites all runners to participate in this unique event. As the ONLY ultra on the AGN Calendar, the event continues to offer all Comrades hopefuls the best opportunity to QUALIFY for Comrades 2018. With the 48km Ultra distance and “mat to mat” timing, runners gain a “2km advantage”.
ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for the 48km Ultra of R320 includes a high quality T-shirt (similar to that of 2017). In 2017, both the entry fee and T-shirt were R180 which brought the total cost to R360. We were inundated by requests for T-shirts and could not keep up with the demand. For 2018, we decided to include the T-shirt in the entry fee and brought down the total cost to R320, a decrease of R40(11%). This is in line with entry fees of other prominent Ultra events hosted in provinces nearby.
IMPORTANT TO MENTION: IRENE Athletics Club does not have an official event sponsor and thus the Club carries the cost of the entire event. Modern Athlete is our MEDIA PARTNER for the event. Entry fee for the 21km half-marathon is R100 and entrants will still have the opportunity to buy the T-shirt at R190.
ONLINE ENTRIES: This year entries for the 48km Ultra are capped at 4000 and for the 21km half-marathon at 2000. The 21 km and 48 km are both ONLINE ENTRIES ONLY events and the closing date for online entries is on 22 March 2018. As such no traditional manual entries are available. If you do not have access to the internet and online banking, you can still enter via your running Club. Please ask your Club Chairperson about this opportunity. The 5km fun run entries will be available on the day of the event.

Running Tip of the Month
Get a massage before race day
When runners are training for peak performance, they often make the mistake of waiting to get a massage until after their event.
The tip of this month is to go and get a massage seven to ten days before your race. Why train so hard and ignore the recovery process? Especially in training programs that involve a mileage taper, the last one to three weeks before an event are about making sure you are fresh for the big day.
Massage therapy speeds athletic recovery and can address some aches and pains that may be problematic on race day, when you want to be as relaxed and well-rested as possible. Massage therapy is great after an event too, but in terms of athletic performance, it's more important before.
Asijiki - No Turning Back!!!
Entries have officially closed for the 46th 'down run' of the iconic Comrades race. With 21,500 entries received in just 21 days, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has officially closed the 2018 Comrades Marathon entry process.
Rowyn James (CMA Race Director) says that the CMA’s sole focus is the athlete and meeting the needs of our participants on Comrades race day. James added, “All roads lead to the Moses Mabhida Stadium come Sunday, 10 June 2018. We look forward to a fantastic day of road-running for all participants.”
